Oh the lighting…The Conversation (1974, Francis Ford Coppola) Cinematographer: Bill Butler

i watched the conversation this morning, the first time i’d seen it in a few years. as soon as it was over, i started it again. then i watched the opening scene several times. it’s been a while since i’ve been so thoroughly absorbed in how good a movie is.

somehow, i am JUST NOW realizing how different my teeth are because of the braces.

they don’t even feel like my teeth. it’s like the entire landscape of my mouth has changed.

i love the blue album and pinkerton, but weezer’s b-sides from those albums tend to be my favourite weezer songs of all.

“We are the generation of nostalgia. We grew up in the age of transition. From hand-written letters to electronic mails. From film to digital. We were fascinated by new things, neglecting the way we spend our afternoons. Cupcakes and tea. Play-Doh and Polly Pockets. Young and naive. Technology completely changed the way we waited and we grew up too fast. The simple things in life seems more meaningful now. We grew up in the age of transition and have become the generation of nostalgia.”

annnnnnd today in “you’ve got to be fucking kidding me”
this artist rented a space in the gallery to use as her studio. the space had an open front and she asked if we could close it off and add a door. the carpenter did the construction, but i always do the finishing work. no big deal.
except.
she was told that the space would be done sometime this week. she decided to just go ahead and move all her stuff into the space last friday, even though that meant that her stuff would get covered in dust and also that i wouldn’t be able to do any work done while she was here. that didn’t stop her from complaining about her space not being ready, even though it was super humid last week and it took forever for each layer of the drywall mud to dry.
oh yeah, and that picture - she asked me to fill in these places on the wall, which was something that i was going to do anyways. she came back a few hours later, before i’d even been able to work on it, and circled the places that needed drywall mud and added this handy note.
so whatever, i ended up doing a rush job just so she’d stop complaining about the space not being ready. i hate how shoddy my work looks. it sure doesn’t help that she’s over in her space right now, sanding the wall even though i put two coats of paint on it earlier today.

the spring camping trip in hot springs is this weekend and i’ve been looking forward to it like crazy. as it turns out, though, there are a bunch of other things happening this weekend that i can’t miss, and it looks like i won’t be able to get to hot springs at all.

it sucks because things have been rough lately and if there’s anything that would cheer me up, it’s a weekend spent sitting around a fire with some of my favourite people, holding a beer in one hand and a cigar in the other. even worse, i’m still on the email list so i get to see everyone talking about how much fun they’re going to have and how many pounds of bacon they’re going to bring.
